Safe toys for children - what YOU need to consider

As a parent or educator, you are responsible for your child's safety - even when playing! Toxic materials, poorly manufactured parts and similar safety defects can turn a toy into a serious risk factor. To prevent this from happening, we at BIG strictly adhere to high quality and safety standards . However, as you cannot blindly rely on this with every manufacturer, you should definitely take a close look at the subject of toy safety.

In the following, we will discuss, among other things, what characterizes safe toys and also go into the toy regulation as well as well-known quality seals and safety certificates.

Why safe toys are important for your child's development

Consciously selected toys that match the child's developmental stage and interests are an important component of a child's development. However, no matter how stimulating, entertaining and educational a product is, if it is not safe, it does not belong in children's hands , as unsuitable toys can pose serious risks of injury. From minor injuries, such as cuts and bruises, to life-threatening dangers, such as those caused by swallowing small parts, anything is conceivable.

In addition, harmful chemical ingredients can affect your child's health in the long term. Safe and secure play in a safe environment is therefore only possible with safe toys. With BIG toys, worries about toy safety are a thing of the past. Because we take meticulous care to make all our toys as safe as possible.

Criteria for safe toys - what to consider when choosing

Nobody deliberately chooses unsafe toys. Unfortunately, it is sometimes impossible to tell the difference between really safe and unsafe toys at first glance. It is therefore essential that you find out how to choose safe toys before you buy them. It is best to base your selection on fixed criteria for safe children's toys, which include the following in particular:

Certifications and seals

There are various test seals and certifications that confirm compliance with certain safety standards and indicate, for example, whether a product has been tested for harmful substances. Although most of these labels do not guarantee that you are dealing with 100% safe toys, they can provide you with important information and guarantee a minimum level of safety.

In the specific case of BIG toys, CE markings show that the products comply with the applicable EU directives. In addition, the Öko-Test publishing house has already awarded some of our toys, most of which we manufacture in Germany, a "very good" rating. From sand and water toys to outdoor and garden toys and children's vehicles, at BIG you will find safe, TÜV-tested toys for completely carefree play experiences.

Other quality seals and certificates that are particularly well-known and respected in Germany are the GS mark, the "Blue Angel" eco-label and various TÜV Rheinland awards. In terms of content, these seals all focus at least in part on tests for harmful substances. For example, you can assume that toys with the GS mark have been tested by TÜV test centers for compliance with legally prescribed limit values.

Age recommendation

Safe toys are often only really safe to use if they are suitable for the age of the child. Especially when young children play with products that are actually intended for much older children, the risk of injury increases. Therefore, always take a look at the manufacturer's age recommendation.

No small parts that can be swallowed

Toys for small children must not contain any small parts that the child could potentially swallow. You should also pay attention to this when buying. With all our toys, you can be sure that all toys are manufactured safely, even for the very youngest children.

Toys without harmful substances

You should also make sure that the product of your choice is made from non-toxic materials. After all, processed toxins can cause irreparable damage to health.

Quality seals and other safety certificates for safe children's toys

Given the rather large number of seals and certifications for toys that exist, you should not assume that every product with any seal is really a safe toy. This is because not all labels are really meaningful.

At this point, we would like to refer to four seals of approval and safety certificates that are particularly well-known and respected in Germany. Firstly, there is the state GS seal for toys, where GS stands for "Tested Safety". Toys with the GS mark have been tested by TÜV test centers for compliance with legally prescribed limit values. The CE mark, which you can also find on BIG products, is also a well-known symbol. With this mark, the manufacturer expresses the conformity of the product with the applicable safety standards.

You may also be familiar with TÜV Rheinland, which issues various seals. The tests carried out often focus on harmful substances, with the TÜV independently determining the criteria for passing. In the area of "safe toys", the "Blue Angel" eco-label of the Federal Environment Agency is comparatively less well known. This seal mainly relates to the environmental friendliness of the products, but also includes tests for harmful substances.

What parents should know about the Toy Safety Regulation

The EU Toy Safety Regulation provides a legal framework for the manufacture of safe toys. It therefore lays down requirements that toy manufacturers must adhere to in terms of toy safety if they wish to place their products on the market in member states. Such requirements concern, for example, limit values for certain ingredients or fire safety. We at BIG naturally comply fully with the EU Toy Safety Regulation and attach great importance to including only the best quality products in our range.

By familiarizing yourself with the toy regulations as well as the certifications and quality seals that are common in this country, you will be able to make responsible purchasing decisions. In this way, you can make well-informed decisions about safe toys and thus protect your child's health.

Conclusion: Safe children's toys

Safe toys allow your child to have fun and develop without endangering their health, safety or well-being. This means that you can create a safe play environment for your child with safe toys, such as the high-quality toys you can buy from BIG , where they can try things out without hesitation and with the lowest possible risk of injury.

To be able to consciously choose safe children's toys when buying toys, you should pay attention to recognized seals that confirm, among other things, that the product is free of harmful substances and the age recommendations. At BIG, we conveniently inform you of the age group for which each toy is intended and meet all the requirements of the EU Toy Safety Regulation.
